Transferring from Blogger to Wordpress

I can't say this is the end-all tutorial - but this is how it goes and how I did the transfer. Firstly, I recommend going Wordpress.org - using the free wordpress.com interface you will run into a lot of problems, mainly you can't run scripts or add certain widgets, edit CSS and things like that, which you can do within the blogger interface. But, what this means is that you have to pay a company for hosting. I recommend GoDaddy, mainly because their tech support is amazing. Every time I call my problem is rectified, not to mention the techs are always friendly and speak clearly and at my level of understanding - no quasi-superior-tech-speak. They are also affordable, if you purchase a year of hosting you'll get a domain name for only $1.99, it equals to about $60 a year.

First things first, let's buy our hosting package. Go to
GoDaddy.com

Click on Hosting & Servers in the top green navigation.

The option I recommend is the Economy 4GH - you can choose between 3 months - 36 months. You want to keep the operating system with Linux, which is default (the penguin).

You get the option to purchase a secure SSL - you would do this if you were running a shopping cart, so you don't need this.

Once you add this to your cart, you will get a TON of other options, this is the one thing that drives me crazy about the GoDaddy.com check out process. It is a lot of stuff to wade through. You really don't need any of it, except if you are purchasing a domain. Look for the area that says START A DOMAIN NAME SEARCH. Search the one you want and hit add to cart. Once you do that, click No Thanks at the bottom.

Purchase and you are good to go.

Now you have to install the Wordpress software on the server. Click the MY ACCOUNT link in the top green navigation.

Scroll down to My Products. Click on your hosting account and LAUNCH the green button next to it. It will take you into your hosting control.

To the right on the page there will be a black button that says APPLICATIONS and right below it, Wordpress. Click Wordpress.

New Page -- loading ;)

Click Install Now the white button under the application rating

You want to click the radio button next to the domain and click the next button.

Godaddy has to set up a Database for WP, I wouldn't keep it as the default WordPress, maybe call it something like YOURDOMAIN_WP

Create a password, I would use the usual Capitol letter, 6 letters, 2 numerics and a symbol password. Save this information somewhere on your harddrive.

Click Next -- now we are going to Choose the directory to install within. You are going to delete wordpress in the box and leave blank.

Now you want to create an Admin name - this is the name you will login to access your Wordpress dashboard. Create a good password so you can't get hacked, but your admin would most likely be the name you want to comment with. I use Parajunkee. Add an email you want to associate with your web/blog and the Blog Title.

Click Finish.

It will take 30 minutes to set up Wordpress and create the database.

Once installed you will access your dashboard by typing in:
YOURURL.com/wp-admin

__________

Transitioning Blogger to Wordpress

Step 1: Transferring your feed

First things first, if you haven't signed up for Feedburner, you have to do so now. If you haven't here is a walk-through { http://parajunkee.com/2011/10/book-blogging-101-lets-talk-feedburner.html }.

Then log into Blogger and go to the Settings > Site Feed and in the POST FEED REDIRECT URL box enter your new FEEDBURNER feed URL

Step 2: Setting Up Wordpress

Go to your WP dashboard:

Let's set it up to work best for your service.

Pinging - this tells WP who to send a PING to when you post. Go to WRITING under Settings and you want to add your PING list, you would do this under Update Services. There is a great list at this blog, you want to copy all these URLs into that box. http://www.sparkplugging.com/sparkplug-ceo/blog-ping-url-list/

Go to SETTINGS > GENERAL and add your time zone

Go to ALL POSTS and delete the Hello World Post.

Go to COMMENTS and delete the Mr. Wordpress comment

Go to Pages and delete the SAMPLE Page

Go back to SETTINGS > Reading and change syndication from 10 to 20 items.

Settings > Permalinks: Now you want to change your permalinks so they match those in blogger. Go to SETTINGS > PERMALINKS and in the CUSTOM PERMALINKS you want to put this in that box:

/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%.html

One more thing to do, for a future step you want to install another plugin for Feedburner. Go into ADD PLUGIN again, and search FEEDSMITH and add and activate that plugin, you'll need that for later to keep your Feedburner account active

Step 3: Import/Export

Back to your Wordpress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add Plugin
Search Term Blogger Importer
Click Install Now on the Blogger Importer
Then it will give you a list of the steps, click Activate once it is done

Now go to Tools > Import

Click on Blogger

They are going to want you to authorize with Google. Sometimes this works and other times it doesn't. It's rather finicky. If it doesn't work when you click authorize, clear your cache and close down your browser. Restart. Open your browser back up. Log in to blogger and gmail with the account you want to authorize and then get back into WP and try to authorize again. That has worked for most in the past. If not try another browser.

Once you authorize you will get a list of all the blogs you mange. Click import next to the name of the blog you want. It will process and you will know it is done when it prompts you to set authors. Click that and set your authors name - usually if you are the only authorized user, it will be easy. If you have multiple authors you will have to create new accounts.

Step 4: Transfer the Feeds time

If you are ready to make the break for it, I would recommend writing a farewell blogger post - now that you've transferred everything and leave a link in that post that says something like - feed and URL is forwarding, but if not please click on this link to be forwarded to our new home and leave your link.

Then, once you do that, login to FEEDBURNER and you now want to edit your feed details. When you set it up to begin with you added your blogger feed, now you want to add your WP feed. Change that blogger feed to: http://YOURURL.com/feed/

Then go back into WP and that Feedsmith that you installed earlier and add your Feedburner link

Step 5: Forwarding your URL

You want people if they somehow click on your old blog, whether search terms, or if they are going to the .blogspot URL to be forwarded to your new address.

Go into DASHBOARD > TEMPLATE > EDIT HTML --blah blah proceed

Search term  <head>

and copy this right after it:
<meta content='0; url=http://YOURNEWURL.com/' http-equiv='refresh'/>

That will do it! You are ready to check yourself out of Blogger and into Wordpress.

I want to be symmetrical! Line up those sidebar images.

If you have the perfectly lined-up OCD bug like I do, you might want your "Grab Buttons" and other images lined up on your blog's sidebar. Or you might have a tendency to like blogs with BIG buttons that pop out your sidebars.  This is how to fix it. Let's look at the PJD sidebar.

You see how every button is rather uneven and the last button - well who designed that :)? Way too big!

Before trying this out, you might want to back up your current HTML gadget in a TXT file (try to stay out of Word it adds it's own HTML and span styles)

Here is how fix it with something called a width attribute.

The first thing we have to take a look at is the grab code that you are provided with. Let's use the PJD button for an example, and it is pretty standard. Most blogs have this standard down.

Break down the code.

<center> Is telling your browser to center the image.

The <a href> tag is telling your browser what to link to.  So the file is linking to http://.parajunkeedesign.blogspot.com

Then You have your <img> tag which is telling the browser what image to use.  This is where you are going to make your change.

There are a few attributes that can go within an IMG tag. This one has very little, but you can get attributes like:

*Note for HTML gurus, these are just some of your optional attributes, there are a lot more event and standard attributes you can attach to an IMG tag.  But these are the ones that an HTML newbie should be worried about.

BORDER: what size border to put around the image (pixels)
ALT: alternate text to show in place of image if a browser has images turned off (the little box of text that pops up when you hold your mouse over and image)
HEIGHT: specifies Height
WIDTH: specifies Width
ALIGN: kind of obvious, left, right, center...etc.

The only attribute we are concerning ourselves with is the WIDTH attribute.

The height & width attributes will default to the images natural size, unless otherwise specified.

As a rule, I usually only like to "scale down".  When you scale up it tends to pixelate the image.  For this tutorial I am going to scale up my images though, to show you what they look like.  PJD sidebar is very large though, and it is very rare that you will be in the need to scale up.

Ok that done. The width tag.

An attribute will be added right within that IMG tag, just like border in the code above. We will add the width tag along with a percentage number to make all our images the same size.  If we set all images in our sidebar with a width of 90% then they will all line up. Let's do it.

Original HTML:

width="90%" added - just add it behind the image link:

Please note that if the Grab Text has a width and height specified already. Delete the height attribute completely, and replace the current width with your specified %%.

Play around with your percentages. Try 98% or 95% or even 50% and see what it looks like. Your blog is in your control, you make the rules.

If I do that to all my images:

Before          After
It really does make a difference!

How to Scroll Your Blog Roll!

Scroll Your Roll With Marquee!

Are your bloggy buttons getting out of hand? Want to show love for your fellow bloggers, but your sidebars are getting way too crowded? This post can help you fix that.

Have you noticed those fancy little scrolling bloggy buttons on other's sites? Well that is nothing but a simple HTML tag that is easy to use in an HTML/Javascript gadget.  All you need to do is copy and paste some text...and have a little bit of understanding so you don't delete anything accidentally.

First off, let me show you what the bones of my gadget look like on Parajunkee.com

What we will be concerning ourselves with is the first couple of lines of text.  The one that opens up with marquee.

Now you can copy and paste what I have, and use it, but if you want to edit it, and modify it to meet your needs, I'll explain how to do that.

First off here is the code:

Breaking it down the <marquee is telling your browser that this is going to scroll. You open the code with that tag.

The next information I have is telling the browser what to do with that marquee tag.

direction="up" - lets the browser know to go up. You can replace UP with RIGHT LEFT & DOWN

width="95%" - The default for the marquee is 100%, but this might cause some inconsistencies with your sidebar. A good rule of thumb is that I set my widths on most of my sidebar objects as either 98% or 95% just to give the appearance of alignment

onmouseover="this.stop()" - this is telling the marquee to stop when someone scrolls their mouse over one of the images. Excellent tag, because you don't want a reader chasing an image with their mouse. Defeats the purpose of the links.

scrollamount="5": this is an animation code. It controls the amount of movement ( between the displays that give the impression of animation. The amount is pixels. Experiment with numbers to see an effect.

onmouseout="this.start()" - This tells the marquee to start up again when the reader moves the mouse. Wouldn't want that marquee to stay stopped, right?

height="250" - This is the height in pixels. This is so you can have "off screen" images. If you don't have a height it will look like just a big moving block of images. This number is in pixels, experiment with sizes, what fits best on your sidebar.

align="left" - And finally I'm telling the browser to align this bad boy left. You can do RIGHT or CENTER also.

Now the rule of HTML is if you open something you have to close it. So remember at the end of all your images, you have to close it!

If you have just one image, like my PJD button (*wink *wink) this is what the total looks like:

Custom Domain. It's time to drop the .blogspot!

Custom domains are $10 a year! Drop that blogspot and join the yourname.com revolution!
I am not promoting GoDaddy - they are just the easiest.

To give your blog an atmosphere of professionalism and a bit more leverage, your own dot com is a good step in that direction. Let me show you how to do it. It's so easy and only cost $10 a year. There is no hosting involved.

My recommendation is straight through bloggers, so there is no ANAME & CNAME changes.  What are those? Don't even worry about that, unless of course you bought your URL somewhere else.

In this demonstration I am going to purchase a URL for my Mommy Blog, Anya's Room.  The current URL is anyasroom.blogspot.com

I am purchasing anyasroom.com

STEP 1. Go to your dashboard
STEP 2: Click on Settings
STEP 3: Click on PUBLISHING

STEP 4: Click on CUSTOM DOMAIN
STEP 5: Pick you URL. Let me make a few suggestions here. The smaller the better. If you Blog Title is: Chick that Reads Under Oak Trees (chickthatreadsunderoaktress.blogspot.com) well you might want to rethink that URL. You might want to try chickthatreads.com or underoaktrees.com

If both those are taken, mix it up: chickreads.com readsunderoaks.com just keep it quick and to the point.

STEP 6: Hit Check availability.  If your URL is not available, like I said before, change it up.

STEP 7: Yeah available. Click Continue to Registration
STEP 8: Reason #2 you should go through blogger and GoDaddy.  They have the privacy option available without extra money.  What is this?

There is this little thing called WhoIs. You can go to a WhoIs look up and see exactly who owns a domain. You have the phone number, address etc. This is how you can do checking on businesses, say you want to check on a site that you want to purchase something from.

That is great for a business, but we aren't really businesses. I'm going to put my home phone number in that area. I'm going to put my home address. This is a mommy blog with pictures of my child, I don't want would be stalkers to know where I live, or say an author who didn't like my review... you see where I am going? Other host/domain registrars charge extra for that privacy feature. This is great that this is offered. Check it off

STEP 9: Fill out the form, you do need to input your phone and address, this is for legal purposes. The man does have to know who is running this domain - in case you turn it into something illegal.

STEP 10: Purchase through Google Check out. They take credit cards as payments, this is very straight forward, like any other online shopping cart.

STEP 11: Go back to your dashboard
STEP 12: SETTINGS
STEP 13: PUBLISHING

STEP 14:  CUSTOM DOMAIN

STEP 15: SWITCH TO ADVANCED SETTINGS

STEP 16: Type in your new URL - don't forget the WWW
STEP 17: Type in your word verification and hit SAVE SETTINGS

You see where it says WE WON'T LEAVE YOU BEHIND. Another handy dandy feature, blogger will forward you blogspot.com URL to your new one. That is very nice of them!

STEP 18: When you have hit Save, another box appears. Click that box: REDIRECT .  This is there so if someone types in anyasroom.com without the www - they won't get an error.  You want to make sure you have this checked off, very important.
STEP 19: Word verification again and SAVE SETTINGS
STEP 20: Check your site. Hit view blog and see that it is your URL that is coming up in the browser.

How can you repay me for this wonderful informative post? Well nothing of course, but if you are a mommy - maybe following my new blog might help. I'M SHAMELESS I KNOW!

PJD How To - Links & Targets

As a web designer I have a few rules that I fastidiously stick to in the midst of a project and one of those is using a _blank target when linking an "outside" URL. Greek? Let me explain. An internal link is when you link to a page that is within your domain.  Think of it as an inner door.  You are staying within your house so it is ok to have just standard links. Yet, when you link outside of your internet home...linking to another site or a form (something that does not have your navigation) you don't won't to loose your visitors right? You want them to keep reading your post, so you use a _blank target to "Pop Out" a new page instead of loading the page on the same page.  Therefor keeping your page open and also letting them see the new page.  When they close the link that you directed them to, there is your page still! Yeah, you didn't lose your visitor.

Here is how to do this.  It requires a bit of HTML.  You need to be able to distinguish the link tag.  Here is an example:

That code will just load the page in the same page as the link. This is the link that blogger does automatically when you hit the link. Now to make it "Pop" a link out you have to add a target.

It is that simple. Usually I just copy target="_blank" and make my links in blogger and then I go back and paste it after the URL to make my life easier. This is a really good practice to get in to so you can keep your visitors on your page.

If you have any questions, leave a comment!

Using Google Docs For Contests - & Badge Contest!

We've all seen them, those handy little forms that people are using to run their contests. But what are they and how easy are they to use? Let's just say I am a BIG FAN.

The Pros
  • Emails are hidden to keep people from getting spammed
  • Entries are collected in a handy-dandy spreadsheet for easy contest winner picking
  • Very organized collection
The Cons
  • Users can't see if they have already entered the contest, so you might get double entries
  • Users are used to the comment and win contests so they might think they entered just by commenting

I really think that the Pros very much out-weigh the Cons, so I'm going to go over how to use Google Docs to run a contest, and tricks that I've found that work well for me.  Sound good??? Let's get started.

What is Google Docs?
Google Docs is a service offered by Google, where you can create spreadsheets, databases and documents, from scratch or using a template.  The main thing I use Google Docs for is the forms.  Very hand function, and something that before you would need a web developer using ASP & MySQL to create. Something way over my head. Now all you need is a GMAIL account - which everyone seems to have.  Don't have one, go get one - Google is taking over the planet, jump on that gravy train, because everything is Free.

Got your gmail account? Good run over to http://docs.google.com to get started.  Sign up, sign in.
You will be brought to your ALL ITEMS page. This is where you start and where all your forms will be listed. A blank one will look like this:

Let's make our first form for a contest I'll run at the end of this post. This contest will be for a FREE Blog button/badge design. (Scroll down for deets)

1. Go to Create New in the upper left hand area

2. Click on FORM

3. You will be taken to the form dashboard

4. Lets Title this form.  Where it says Untitled Form lets I'm calling it PJD Contest Entry.  You want this to be rather original because if you have multiple forms, you need to be able to know which one is which.

5. Type NAME where it says "Sample Question 1"

6. Make sure Make this a required question is checked off (used this for all questions that you want people to HAVE TO answer.  This is called form validation

6. Hit Done - Yeah! You have your first form entry!

7. Now there should be a Sample Question 2, move your mouse over that question, it should highlight yellow, and settings will appear. The pen is to edit. The boxes are to duplicate.  The trash to delete that question

8. Change Sample Question 2 to Email, make sure to check off the required question box.

9. Go to ADD ITEM in the top left corner. We are now doing a check box to validate that they are a follower - which is the usual reason for a personally hosted contest. So click on the item CHECKBOXES

10. Change Untitled Question to Follower?
  • I'm going to add help text, this is small text under the question to help the user answer the question.  My help text will be: You must be a follower to enter this contest.
  • Question Type is Checkboxes.
  • The first checkbox - change Option 1 to +2 Old Follower
  • Click in the blank second option - change Option 2 to +1 New Follower
  • The make sure to check off the required question box.
  • Click Done

11. Extra Entries!
  • Go to Add Item - Click Checkboxes
  • Change Untitled Question to Extra Entries
  • Help Text:  Please provide proof of extra entries with a link below.
  • Let's give them extra ways to get contest points:
    • +1 Tweet
    • +2 Sidebar
    • +3 Post
    • +5 Parajunkee Design Button
  • This question does not have to be entered, so do not check off make this required.
  • Hit Done

12. Space to provide links
  • Go to Add Item - Click Paragraph Text
    • This Item is for multiple entries
    • Use this if you want to collect paragraphs of information or multiple lines of text
    • Change Untitled Question to Links for Extra Entries
    • Help Text:  Please provide proof of extra entries here.
    • This question does not have to be entered, so do not check off make this required.
    • Hit Done
 13. To save my bad addition skills I provide an area to add up the points.
  • Go to Add Item - Click Text
    • This Item is for a single line entry
    • I usually just use these for name, email, url entries
  • Change Untitled Question to Add up your entries please +1
  • This question does not have to be entered, so do not check off make this required.
  • Hit Done
  •  Hit Save
Your entries for the form are now done!
This is what mine looks like:

If you don't want yours to be plain white we can style it.  Go to THEME: Plain in top menu bar. By clicking on it will take you to a list of different themes. I'm going with a Theme called Blue on the last page that matches my style. You pick your theme just by clicking on the image. Don't forget to hit APPLY.

Now it is time to EMBED.  Oooh scary.
    1. Go to More Actions in top menu.  Make sure your form is saved.
    2. Click on embed.
    3. A menu pops up with a string of code. This is what you need to copy and paste in your post.
    4. I'm working with Blogger so I'm going to walk you through using your blogger dashboard.
    5. Create your post with all your contest details
    6. Go to Edit HTML
    7. Scroll Down! At the end of the post - recommended to do this at the very end - copy and past that code.
    8. OMG it is huge and doesn't fit in my post column!
      1. Let's fix that - it is time to code
      2. Go back to Edit HTML
      3. This is what the code looks like:
      4. What you are looking for is the width & height tags these can be changed without any problems.  I like to change mine to a percentage, so I don't have to figure out pixels for my columns.  So change that width="760" to width="95%"
      5. My personal preference is to use 95% instead of 100% because it usually doesn't have buggy problems.
      6. The code should look like this:
      7. Go to Compose it should show up better now.
    You now have a form!

Publish your post and wait for the entries.

    How to view those entries?
    1. Go to Google Docs
    2. You will see a list of your forms that you created
    3. Click on the form you just created
    4. It will show you the spreadsheet with all the entries
    5. It is that easy.

    Tips & Tricks
    1. To battle the Cons I usually encourage contest entrants to comment on the posts so they can look in the comments section to see if they entered the contest.  This is also good practice if you enter a lot of contests.  Make it your practice if you fill out a form to make a comment in the post.
    2. People comment thinking this is how to enter.
      1. You really can't battle people that don't read and just enter a contest.  There are people that don't pay attention to rules and details.  If your rules are stated plainly it is their fault they didn't read the post and enter correctly.  It is your choice whether you count their entry or not. I usually don't, because I find it insulting that they didn't take the time to read over the instructions.
    3.  Counting your entries

Now for the Contest! Win a Blog Badge/Button like the ones on the sidebar ---->

      Contest Deets & Rules
      1. FILL OUT THE FORM BELOW
      2. You must be a follower of Parajunkee Design
      3. You must have an existing blog
      4. Winner will receive 1 badge and the code to enter into an HTML/Java widget
      5. Contest is open to EVERYONE
      6. Contest ends January 12th
      7. Hint* - so you can know you entered this contest, comment in this post!

      Extra Entries:
      • +1 Tweet
      • +2 Sidebar
      • +3 Post
      • +5 Parajunkee Design Button

How to have a "Grab My Badge"

I've gotten a few questions on how to add a grab my badge/button link in the sidebar.  It is really very easy to do if you have some basic HTML knowledge.

First off you have to host your button/badge on a third party server such as www.flickr.com

              1. Once you have your image hosted, get the URL: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2695/4190373200_e20fa291a5_o.png
              2. Go to blogger dashboard and insert a new HTML/Javascript widget
              3. Title Your Widget - i.e. Grab my Badge!
              4. Within the content you have to tell blogger what image to display and where to link it to. Here is the sample code:
              <a href="http://parajunkeedesign.blogspot.com/"><img border="0" width="90%" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2695/4190373200_e20fa291a5_o.png"/></a>

In the first highlighted that is where you put your URL.  The a href= is the HTML code link.
In the second highlighted area that is going to tell the browser what image to display.

ALWAYS remember paste your code between the " " marks.

              5.  Now it is time for the textarea code

              <textarea id="code-source" rows="3" name="code-source"><a href="http://parajunkeedesign.blogspot.com/"><img border="0" width="90%" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2506/4125657740_8bd542db80_o.png"/></a></textarea>

The area highlighted is the same exact code that you worked in early, just wrapped in <textarea> tags.

              6. What you need to know about the extras:
              •  I have the width set at 90% within the code.  This is so my button doesn't overpower someones sidebar.  If the width is set at 90% you know your button isn't going to be bigger than anyone's sidebar.  This has a downfall though, people with very large sidebars, it might stretch your image out and distort it, but I take the risks, because the majority of sidebars don't surpass 250 pixels.
              • Secondly I have it set to border=0 this is so a border will not appear around my button and ruin the look of it.
This should be it, if you have any questions, just let me know!
